Games in a Pub – 6th January 2013

A new year and a new pub, the Crow and Gate, Crowborough

With the beginning of the New Year we decided to take our merry band on the road and try out a new venue. We have been meeting at the Blue Anchor now for 2 years and it had been my hope to bring the wealth of modern board and card games to the attention of the wider community, not just gamers.

The reality is that with a few exceptions and in spite of the redoubtable efforts of Damian (the landlord at the Blue Anchor) to interest his clientèle in our activities, largely little interest has been shown. So following the premise of nothing ventured nothing gained the idea is to try a new nearby location and see if the winds of chaos result in a different outcome! Time will tell.
Settlers of Catan - Two of our players, Robin and Gwen

With two of our number sick (it’s that time of year!) it left just 4 of us to play. The question was what? Robin had been given Settlers of Catan last year for Father’s Day and the game was still un-punched so what better way to start the year than with the daddy of modern board games. A game that as recounted elsewhere in my blog we have played many times over the last decade but one which Robin was yet to play.
Settlers of Catan - The close up of the board mid way through the game
It was a close game with those in second place all on 9 points at the point that Gwen won by acquiring a one point Development card taking her total to the winning 10 victory points. In a blatant (and I know unfounded) whinge about the game I feel I must mention that where both Gwen’s and my efforts had focused on Development Cards. However twice she used a Monopoly card to, I believe the term is rob, the rest of us of our Corn and Sheep (something that I of course would not have done!) whilst amassing 4 Victory points from the other Development Cards she bought. I on the other hand acquired virtually the same number of Development Cards, with only 1 victory point and built an Army that would have impressed Charlemagne but in terms of the game was of no value after the 5th knight! Hey ho, it was fun and victory could have gone to any of the players.
